Indoor Gardening the Organic Way: How to Create a Natural and Sustaining Environment for Your Houseplants

Gardening organically outdoors is prevalent in most horticultural circles these days, but what about gardening indoors? Many gardeners still use harsh synthetic chemical fertilizers and pesticides when growing plants in their homes. How can we choose to eat organic foods, buy natural personal-care products, clean our indoor air, and yet still blast our poor houseplants with toxic chemicals? It is time to put down that spray bottle. Going organic with houseplants is not only possible-the results are amazing!
Author Julie Bawden Davis brings us Indoor Gardening the Organic Way, a definitive guide to growing houseplants organically. From the dirt on mulch to eco-friendly ways to handle plant pests, Davis has provided this essential resource for novice and experienced gardeners alike. When you learn the specialized rules of gardening organically indoors, you’ll soon reap the benefits of robust houseplants that will impress visitors and make your indoor environment a healthier place to be.

I’ve just started learning how to grow indoor plants organically, and I’m really enjoying this book. It’s well-written, incredibly interesting, and easy to understand. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in learning how easy it is to grow an indoor garden in an environmentally safe way.

I love gardening, but while enjoying lots of success outdoors, nurturing healthy indoor plants has been a challenge for me. They never stayed alive! Then I went to a gardening seminar at a local nursery and Julie Bawden Davis was speaking. I wasn’t planning on buying her book but after hearing her speak and learning how knowledgeable and down to earth she was, I bought the book and now am the proud owner of a signed copy! The best part is, I actually have live houseplants now, having taken the great advice in her book. I feel good that I am not using harmful chemicals in my house. I also like the illustrations which are said to be drawn by her daughter, which adds to the charm of the book. I highly recommend this if you have a black thumb regarding indoor plants or even if you have a green one.

After reading the first paragraph of this book I realized Julie Bawden-Davis’ passion for organic houseplant gardening. Her explanations of horticulture terms are presented in a manner that’s easy to understand, witty, but very concise. She includes info on the basics of organic care (soil content, feeding, etc.) for all plants, while also focusing a section on specific plants and their care. Even if one chooses not to adopt organic practices for houseplants, this is still an excellent reference for how to understand the needs of your plants.

What a great book. I am not a very experienced indoor gardener to begin with. This book was so helpful in getting me started on indoor gardening. And to top that off it is all organic and good for my family and the environment. A very informative and well written book. I love it!

I keep going back to this book time and again as a reference for my many questions. It is challenging and informative, but is also written for those of us who have had less experience in organic gardening. This book makes a great gift. I have bought 6 to give as gifts and 1 for myself. What a delightful way to enjoy the art of indoor gardening.
