Will the Diseased Leaves on Houseplants Heal?

Find out if the diseased or damaged leaves on your houseplants will heal. This is a commonly asked question. Usually you need to prune out the leaves. It’s also a good idea to determine why the leaf is damaged or diseased in the first place and to dispose of it in a sealed plastic bag.

Today, I’m going to answer a question I often get: will the diseased leaves on my plant, the damaged leaves on my plant, heal? This is a valid question, right? Because you think, like with humans, if we get a bruise, it generally heals. If we get a cut or a scratch, it heals as well.

It stands to reason that, potentially, the leaves on your plant could heal, could get better, and could look better. If it’s something like a disease or a brown leaf tip, there are various reasons for brown leaf tips, but it could be related to what’s in the water or dry air.

However, when you have physical problems, like what happened with this fern here, it’s not going to get better or go away. The only way to deal with it usually is to cut it off. If there are some brown leaf tips, you can cut around the leaf tips. I have a video on doing that as well.

In this case, you can see that the other leaves are doing fine. At one point in its development, the plant had some problems that seem to be related to dry air. I do have a little frond coming up right there, so the plant is continuing to grow. To help the plant put more energy into the new frond and potentially more fronds coming up, the best thing for me to do is to remove that damaged leaf.

So, I’m going to remove it at the base here. If the leaf you have is suffering from a disease, like a leaf spot caused by fungal pathogens, the best thing to do is to dispose of it in a sealed plastic bag. Tie it up and bring it out to the trash to get it out of the way. You don’t want to risk spreading any disease.

In this case, I’m guessing the issue was more about the plant drying out because ferns do like it very moist, and I am in Southern California, where the air tends to get very dry. However, if you’re unsure, it’s best to be on the safe side, like I said. Just put it in a plastic bag, tie it up, and I’ll throw this away as soon as I’m done with the video to prevent any spores from causing more problems.

Now, you can see the plant looks a lot better. It still has some growing to do, and hopefully, we’ll get some more fronds. I need to give it a little bit more humidity, perhaps by placing it among other plants that require higher humidity. Plants can actually help increase the humidity for each other.

As mentioned, cutting off the damaged leaves not only removes potential diseases but also allows the plant to direct all its energy into the healthy leaves instead of trying to sustain a dead leaf. This was still taking up water and nutrients when, really, we don’t want that leaf. Now, it can focus its energy on the new frond and the new fronds that will emerge as well. I also have a video on keeping ferns healthy and happy indoors, so you can check that out.

FAQs about Plant Care

Will the diseased leaves on my plant heal?

This is a valid question, as it seems logical that, like humans, plant leaves could heal. However, if the leaves are suffering from physical problems, such as disease or damage, they generally will not heal. In many cases, the best course of action is to cut off the damaged leaves.

What should I do with brown leaf tips on my plant?

If your plant has brown leaf tips, you can cut around them to remove the damaged parts. This allows the plant to redirect energy to the healthy leaves, promoting better overall health.

How do I dispose of diseased leaves properly?

For leaves affected by disease, it is best to dispose of them in a sealed plastic bag. Tie it up securely and discard it in the trash to prevent any risk of spreading the disease.

Why do ferns develop dry leaves?

Ferns thrive in moist conditions, and dry leaves often indicate that the plant is experiencing insufficient humidity or is drying out due to environmental factors. It’s important to maintain proper humidity levels for ferns.

How can I increase humidity for my plants?

You can increase humidity for your plants by grouping them together, as plants can create a microclimate that helps retain moisture. Additionally, consider using a humidifier or placing a tray of water near your plants.
