Today, I’m going to answer a frequently asked question: How far from a plant should you keep artificial full-spectrum lighting to ensure healthy growth?
To keep plants healthy, you want the lights to be pretty close to the tops of the plants. That’s why something like this Gardener Supply lighting system works really well—you can position the light directly above the plants for optimal photosynthesis and growth. It’s important to have the light coming down onto the plants, similar to how sunlight naturally shines down on trees and bushes. While the sun’s trajectory changes throughout the day, midday sunlight typically comes from above.
Generally, you want the plant lights positioned two to four inches above the plants. For smaller plants, you should keep the light closer, while for larger plants, you can raise the light slightly. This particular unit is adjustable, allowing you to easily move the light up or down to achieve the best positioning.
Flowering plants require more light than many other types of plants. In this setup, I have African violets, a Chinese money plant, and a Peperomia. The rule of thumb is to keep the light two to four inches above the plants. Smaller plants need the light closer, and for larger plants, you can adjust the light higher.
This unit has metal cording that enables you to easily move the lights down or up as needed. Eventually, plants may outgrow this setup, but there are other units available that can accommodate taller plants.
I hope this gives you a good idea of how close to position artificial lighting for your houseplants. Thank you for stopping by today!
