Hello and welcome to HealthyHouseplants.com, where we teach you all about gardening in the great indoors! If you’d like to support our show, please use our Amazon affiliate link below. Today, I am showing you this beautiful coleus. I grew this coleus from seed in an AeroGarden seed starter system. AeroGarden allows you to grow plants, but you can also grow seeds using your own seed selection. I love to grow coleus in the AeroGarden.
Here’s a shot of the AeroGarden with some coleus growing in it. As you can see, they come up beautifully and grow well. They also transplant really well into soil, as seen in this beauty here. I wanted to showcase this plant because it’s simply gorgeous and to let you know that it’s really easy to grow coleus from seed, especially hydroponically.
A really fun aspect of growing coleus from seed is the surprise of color and pattern variations. The Botanical Interests seed mix, for example, offers a nice variety, so you never know exactly what sort of coleus leaf pattern and colors you’re going to get when you plant the seeds. Watching the leaves start to appear feels like Christmas morning, with each new leaf bringing a surprise of color.
These plants love the warmth of the indoors, and as you can see, this coleus is thriving. They do need a good amount of light. I have a video on growing coleus indoors, and I’ll include a link below for those interested. Being a tropical plant, coleus grows fairly quickly. You’ll notice that this one has gone to seed. If you let the seed stock on top turn brown, you can even harvest seeds from it.
It’s usually better to prune off the flower to prevent the plant from stopping growth. If you see that the plant’s growth is slowing, it’s a good idea to prune off the flower. I’ve had instances where I allowed the flower to turn to seed. Once it turns brown, you can collect the seeds. But if you’re worried about stunted growth, pruning the flower is a good practice. Check out some of my videos on pruning, which I’ll link below, to see techniques on how to prune plants effectively.
