Today, we are going to talk about cyclamen. These beautiful plants are very common during the holiday season and winter months, as they thrive in cold weather. You might receive one as a gift or buy one yourself, as they’re a lovely addition to indoor gardens during this time of year.
Cyclamen can bloom for quite a long time indoors if cared for properly. When purchasing a cyclamen, look for plants with unopened buds to extend the bloom period. Cyclamen can stay beautiful indoors for two to three months in ideal conditions. I’ll also share tips on keeping them healthy and how to get them to bloom again next year.
Cyclamen come in a variety of colors, including white, red, fuchsia, salmon, lavender, yellow, and pink. Their heart-shaped, gray-green leaves are often variegated with silvery patterns, adding to their appeal. They grow from tubers, with flowers on short stalks. Cyclamen persicum, the florist’s cyclamen, is the best-known variety and is widely grown.
To keep cyclamen healthy, place them in a cool area (55-65°F) and avoid warm spots near heating sources. They thrive in bright light, ideally in an eastern, southern, or western window. Overwatering can kill cyclamen quickly, so allow the top layer of soil to dry out between waterings. Fertilize them with a mild, organic fertilizer during their growing season.
When cyclamen stop flowering in spring, taper off watering until the leaves die back. Place the plant in a cool, dim location for two to three months. In mid-summer, move it outdoors to a shaded spot, resume watering, and fertilize every three to four weeks. When fall temperatures dip near freezing, bring the plant indoors, and it should start blooming again by mid-winter.
Repot cyclamen every two years in rich, well-draining soil with peat moss or coco coir mixed with perlite or pumice. Watching cyclamen rebloom each year brings great satisfaction, and they make a delightful indoor plant during winter months.
