Hello and welcome to Healthy Houseplants, where we teach you all about gardening in the great indoors. Today, I’m going to talk about leaf shine products.

I know that many people like to use leaf shine products on their houseplants because they make the leaves nice and shiny, which is really pretty to look at. However, it’s not really good for the plants, and it actually is not good for you either.

The reason it’s not good for the plants is because when you spray the leaf shine products on them, you block the leaf stomata. Stomata are how the leaves breathe, taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. If you block them, the plant can’t effectively clean the air for you, which is one of the great benefits of having houseplants indoors.

Take this Arrowhead plant, for example. It has a natural sheen that’s quite attractive. If you prefer plants with a natural shine, look for ones like these that naturally have pretty leaves and a healthy sheen.

To keep your plants shiny without harming them, regularly clean the leaves with a soft cloth or microfiber cloth. You can mist the leaves lightly with water and wipe them gently. This method not only keeps them shiny but also allows them to continue breathing properly.

Avoid using unconventional methods like mayonnaise, which can clog up the leaves and cause more harm than good. Stick with natural methods that promote healthy plant growth and appearance.
