How to Grow Moonflower Indoors

Learn how to grow moonflowers indoors. These beautiful, fragrant flowers are fun to grow indoors. And they really do bloom with giant white flowers that smell heavenly! Moonflowers will perfume your indoors. You can even watch them unfurl. Find out how to plant moonflowers by seed and what kind of lighting they need. You want to have them under artificial, full-spectrum lighting that simulates daylight for 14-16 hours a day. They will bloom under the lights. Also keep them well-watered, but not soggy. If they are growing for more than a month, feed them with a well-balanced organic fertilizer, like a 5-5-5. Also, plant the seeds in a lightweight potting soil or seed starting mix.

Hello and welcome to HealthyHouseplants.com, where we teach you all about gardening in the great indoors! Today, I’m excited to share something special about growing moonflowers indoors. Typically, I grow them outdoors in the summertime, but this year I decided to experiment with indoor cultivation. This way, even those who don’t have outdoor space can enjoy the beauty and fragrance of moonflowers.

These are moonflower seeds from Renee’s Gardens. The flowers are stunning, and their aroma is incredible—so much so that I wish there was a perfume made from it! If you get the chance, I highly recommend trying to grow them. All you need are seeds, soil, and a good lighting system. I’m using a full-spectrum lighting system from Gardener’s Supply, which simulates daylight. The seeds should be kept moist but not soggy, and the lights should be on for about 14 hours a day, from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m.

I wasn’t sure if the flowers would bloom with the lights still on since they usually bloom at dusk outdoors, but to my delight, they bloom indoors at dusk as well. After the flowers bloom, they form seed pods. Once the flowers have fallen off, you can let the plant go to seed. Inside the seed pod, you’ll find several seeds that you can harvest for future planting.

To plant the seeds, you can soften them first by soaking them in water for about 6-7 hours. However, don’t let them soak longer, as they can get too soft and might not germinate properly. You can also plant them directly into the soil. Plant the seeds at a depth equal to their width, cover them with soil, and water them well. I use Pro-Mix BX potting soil, which works well for both potting and seeding.

Here you can see some moonflowers I planted 10 days ago. They germinated quickly and are doing well. They will need a trellis or some sort of support as they grow, so be sure to provide one in time, as they grow rapidly. In terms of fertilizing, if you start with good soil, you might not need to fertilize. However, if the plants continue growing for more than a month, you can use an all-purpose fertilizer with a balanced ratio like 4-4-4 or 5-5-5.

If you’re in a warm climate, you can eventually move the plants outside, but this indoor method is perfect for those who can’t grow outdoors or want to enjoy moonflowers year-round. Their beautiful blooms and amazing scent are sure to brighten any indoor space.
