Best Type of Water for Houseplants-Distilled? / Viewer Inspired

Find out if you should be using spring, bottled water, or distilled water on your houseplants. Distilled water doesn’t contain harmful minerals like chlorine or fluoride, but it also doesn’t contain good minerals. Bottled and spring water does contain good minerals, but you don’t always know what’s in the water. If you’re having problems with brown leaf tips, it’s often best to use distilled water and use fertilizer to get needed minerals.

Today, we have another viewer-inspired video. This question came from Sarah Duret, who asked whether spring bottled water or distilled water is better for houseplants. Sarah mentioned that she has read that spring water is good for plants because it still has natural minerals. She wanted to know if she should purchase distilled or spring water.

This is a really good question because some plants, such as the Dracaena family and spider plants, are very prone to brown leaf tips. I have a video on that linked below. These plants often develop brown leaf tips from certain substances in the water, such as chlorine and fluoride.

Distilled water is free of any minerals and contaminants; it’s essentially just pure water. By using distilled water, you can help prevent brown leaf tip burn from occurring.

On the other hand, spring water contains minerals that can be beneficial for plants. However, the downside is that you don’t always know what is in that spring water. In addition to beneficial minerals, it could also contain substances like fluoride and chlorine, which may contribute to brown leaf tips.

If a plant is developing brown leaf tips and you’ve determined that the water is the cause, using distilled water would be your best choice. To compensate for the lack of minerals in distilled water, it’s a good idea to fertilize your plants with an organic fertilizer, which you are likely already doing. I recommend my Green Gourmet House Plant Food, an organic fertilizer linked below. By using a high-quality organic fertilizer, you’ll help ensure that your plant receives sufficient nutrients, regardless of the type of water you’re using.

Using distilled water in sensitive plants will help prevent brown leaf tips caused by unwanted substances in the water. However, it’s worth noting that brown leaf tips can result from other issues as well. You might want to check out my video to explore the various reasons for brown leaf tips.

So, to answer the question: should you use spring bottled water or distilled water for your houseplants?
