Today, I’m going to talk to you about Dracaena. This is one of my favorite categories of plants. There are a lot of different species and types, and they are so easy to grow. Besides the fact that they come in a wide variety of colors and shapes of leaves, which is great for decorating your home.

Some of the Dracaena have leaves that are nice and pointy on the end with thin leaves, like the Dracaena ‘Janet Craig’. Then, there are others with a bolder, strappier leaf, like the one shown here. I love the contrast and the colors. This Dracaena has beautiful leaves with a swirl pattern in the center of the plant, which a lot of them also display.

These smaller plants can grow quite large and long, like the Dracaena ‘Janet Craig’, which can even grow on a long stem with the plant at the end, resembling a standard rose bush. Another example is the Dracaena ‘Fragrance’ or corn plant, which is gorgeous and fills spaces in the corners of your rooms nicely. They can be used effectively as dividers in your home.

Now for the even better part: they are easy to grow! Not only do they grow fairly quickly, but they also become impressive plants in a short time. Dracaenas can thrive in medium to dark conditions, making them perfect for homes with lower light. However, they do need some light, and they do not do well in really bright sunny windows, as that can cause leaf burns.

Dracaenas tolerate a wide variety of watering habits, which is another advantage. For instance, if you forget to water, they will still be okay, though you might notice some dry leaf tips. Overwatering can be an issue, but they are more tolerant of it compared to other plants. The main pest that loves them is the mealybug. They thrive in the swirls of the leaves where they can hide before unfurling. Keep an eye out for these pests, and if you find them, rinse them off immediately with isopropyl alcohol (70%) until you have them under control.

Regarding humidity, Dracaenas enjoy some humidity but can also survive without it. You can mist them or place them over a humidity tray filled with marbles, pebbles, or gravel. Just make sure the plant doesn’t sit directly in water. This can help alleviate issues with dry leaf tips due to insufficient humidity.

When it comes to fertilizing, Dracaenas can go quite a while without it, but I recommend using a good organic fertilizer every three months to keep them growing lush and looking good. If you want to slow down their growth, you can fertilize every six months instead.

Dracaenas are one of my favorite types of houseplants, and I suggest exploring the various species available. They can be long-lasting companions, with some of mine being several years old.
