Finding a Place to Pot Up
No, I’m not talking about that kind of potting up! (Although, who knows, maybe the same rules apply.) I’m referring to creating a dedicated space in your home where you can comfortably pot plants, treat ailing ones, and do some necessary pruning.
Even if your space is tight, having a small corner for plant care can be incredibly beneficial. Without a designated spot, you may find yourself postponing plant maintenance until you can clear the kitchen table or the garage bench. You know how it goes: “Someday I’ll pot up my houseplants and make them look amazing!” Just like, “Someday I’ll lose 50 pounds; someday I’ll make a million dollars; someday I’ll win the lottery; someday I’ll finish the kid’s baby books; someday I’ll clean out that closet…” You get the idea!
If possible, it’s helpful to have a small potting table—even if it’s tucked away in a closet or the garage. With all your tools and indoor gardening supplies on hand, you can quickly and easily repot a plant, treat it for pests and diseases, and perform any necessary pruning. A potting table also serves as a great spot for quarantining new plants before introducing them to your existing plant family.
Choosing a Potting Table
A well-designed potting table with ample working space, convenient shelves, and drawers makes indoor gardening chores much easier. There’s a wide variety of potting tables available, or you can build your own. When selecting a potting table, consider the height that feels most comfortable for you. Will you be wearing shoes, or will you be going barefoot while potting?
Of course, the kitchen table can also work—providing you can access it! Any table tucked away in your home where you can store gardening supplies and get some work done will suffice.
Enjoying Your Indoor Gardening Space
Whatever you choose as your potting station and wherever you decide to place it in your home, remember to have fun caring for your precious houseplants!
