Today, I’m adding to my lighting series and showing you this really cool lighting system I really like. It’s a Gardener Supply model that I’ve been using for a while. This one has two lights underneath that are full spectrum and replicate daylight, so it does a really good job keeping your plants nicely lighted.
I’ve got some African violets under here, as well as a pink polka dot plant, a palea, and a Chinese money plant. One thing I really like about this system is that the lighting is right above the plants. That’s really where you want the lighting in order to promote healthy growth. This is the most effective way to initiate photosynthesis in the plants and prevents them from stretching toward the light and becoming leggy.
This tray underneath comes with it, and I like it because you can water everything in there without worrying about any water spilling. I also sometimes put a seedling mat underneath it, which keeps the roots of the plants warm and facilitates healthy growth. It’s really good for seeding things too when you’re doing seeding in late winter for spring and that sort of thing.
It has a really good construction, as you can tell, with the light on top of the plants. As mentioned, this system also adjusts, so you can move the light up and down as the plants grow, which is really handy. If you have really tall plants, they will outgrow the space, so that is something to keep in mind. However, there are other models available as well.
This shows you a great way to be able to give your plants a lot of really good light. One thing you can do with flowering plants like African violets is bud them up under light and put them in different areas of the house until they are done blooming. Then, you can put them back under the light. This way, you’re giving your plants a dose of good light throughout the week, which will keep them healthy and happy.
