Hello and welcome to HealthyHousePlants.com’s video. Today, we’re going to talk about this strange-looking fruit in front of you. This is actually an unripened flower spike from a split-leaf philodendron, also known as Monstera deliciosa. The reason it’s called “deliciosa” is because this fruit, though it looks strange, is actually very tasty. Interestingly, this fruit takes an entire year to ripen on the plant.
This is one of my first fruits like this on my monstera. I first discovered the spike on September 4th of last year, 2013, and I had read that it takes about a year for the fruit to ripen. Sure enough, on September 4th of this year, the fruit was ripe. It easily came off the spike into my hand. As you can see, it does look like a fruit, but you need to wait the entire year for it to ripen. If you eat this fruit before it ripens, it can burn your mouth and throat.
As you can see, this one is pretty ripe. When the fruit is ready, it comes off the spike easily, and it is extremely tasty. The flavor has been described as a cross between a mango, a pineapple, and a banana. However, when I taste it, I taste pineapple with a very floral overtone. It’s very flowery and really incredible—unlike any other taste sensation you’ve ever experienced.
To eat it, you pull off the scales, and the flesh underneath is what you eat. Once the scales come off easily, you know that the fruit is ripe and ready to enjoy. I made sure to wait until it was very ripe because I was worried about eating it too early.
