Hello, and welcome to HealthyHouseplants.com, where you learn all about gardening in the great indoors. Today we’re going to talk about how I got a Dendrobium orchid to rebloom in my house. Today’s video is also sponsored by our Amazon affiliate link, which you can see below.
I received this beauty a year ago for my birthday from my niece. When she gave it to me, of course, it was blooming, and I thought, “Oh my gosh, that is so pretty!” To be honest, I have tried to rebloom some of the more difficult orchids, such as Dendrobiums, indoors and haven’t had much luck. I have had success with Phalaenopsis orchids, which are generally the easiest to rebloom, but Dendrobiums can be a bit more challenging. I didn’t give up, but I was honestly surprised when it recently started reblooming. It took a year, but here it is, blooming beautifully!
So, what did I do to get it to this point? First of all, I provided it with bright light. It is placed next to an AeroGarden, which has some helpful LED lighting. I also fertilized it a couple of times, as I know you should fertilize orchids when they are not flowering. I used a liquid fertilizer about three or four months after it initially bloomed and then again a couple of months ago.
Additionally, I keep it on a humidity tray. I have another video showing how to create one, but basically, you can see the orchid is on rocks or pebbles (you can also use marbles). The tray has water filled just below the rocks, so as the water evaporates, it humidifies the plant. You always want the water level just below the rocks to prevent the bottom of the pot from sitting in water, which can cause root rot.
This orchid is also planted in orchid bark, which is essential. Orchids like these grow naturally in the jungle, often hanging from trees as epiphytes, rather than in soil. The orchid bark supports the plant upright and allows airflow, mimicking its natural environment. Over time, though, orchid bark breaks down and becomes more like heavy soil. When this happens, it’s time to repot the orchid with fresh orchid bark. I plan to do this after this bloom cycle, as it’s best not to disturb orchids when they are flowering.
In terms of watering, I water it when the bark is almost dry but not completely. I use warm water, as I’ve mentioned in other videos, allowing the water to run through thoroughly without letting the pot sit in water. This watering method is crucial to keeping the orchid healthy.
That’s about it! I’m very excited to see this beautiful orchid bloom, and I look forward to trying other challenging orchids indoors. I’ll check back with you when I have updates. Thank you for watching! Please continue to enjoy gardening in the great indoors, and remember to like, comment, subscribe, and share this video.
How can I encourage my Dendrobium orchid to rebloom indoors?
What lighting does a Dendrobium orchid need to rebloom?
To encourage a Dendrobium orchid to rebloom, provide it with bright light. Placing the orchid near an LED light, such as in an AeroGarden, can support its light requirements.
How often should I fertilize a Dendrobium orchid to help it rebloom?
Fertilize your Dendrobium orchid when it is not flowering. Apply a liquid fertilizer a few months after blooming and again after several months.
Why should I use a humidity tray for my orchid?
A humidity tray, filled with water just below rocks or pebbles, increases humidity around the orchid as the water evaporates. This setup prevents the plant from sitting in water, reducing the risk of root rot.
What type of potting material should I use for my Dendrobium orchid?
Use orchid bark for Dendrobium orchids. Orchid bark allows airflow around the roots, replicating the orchid’s natural environment. Repot with fresh bark when it starts to break down.
How should I water my Dendrobium orchid?
Water the orchid when the bark is almost dry but not completely. Use warm water and allow it to flow through the pot, ensuring the pot does not sit in water, as this can harm the plant’s roots.
