In this video, we’re discussing what to do when a plant won’t come out of its pot during repotting. This issue is common and can be frustrating, especially if your plant clearly needs a larger container. If you’re struggling to remove the plant, avoid pulling on it, as this could damage the roots and harm the plant.
For plants in plastic containers, you can use sturdy shears to carefully cut the pot from the bottom up, making it easier to free the plant. Simply cut along the sides of the pot and peel it away like a shell.
For ceramic or decorative pots, you don’t want to break the pot, so try watering the plant first. Moistening the soil can help loosen the plant’s roots, making it easier to slide out. Wait about half an hour after watering, as this can further help the plant release from the pot.
If watering doesn’t work, try using a bendable knife to slide along the inner edge of the pot, loosening the soil. Be sure to move the knife all the way around the pot, keeping it close to the edge. You can also try gently tapping the pot on a hard surface, which may help release the plant.
For very stubborn, root-bound plants, you can try gently pushing on the drainage holes with a blunt object to help the plant slide out.
Once the plant is free, gently loosen the roots before placing it in a larger pot with fresh soil.
