Today, I’m answering a question that I often get from viewers: How do you keep spike moss alive indoors?

Spike moss loves humidity. So if you want to ensure that your spike moss is going to be okay and thrive, I would suggest putting it in some sort of terrarium. I have a terrarium here with spike moss in it, and it absolutely loves it. I’ll take off the lid in a second and show you.

This is just the best way, as I mentioned, to make sure that your spike moss is very happy. It’s really hard in most homes to achieve the necessary humidity levels without a terrarium. Without it, it would be nearly impossible to grow spike moss unless you live in a very humid climate. Otherwise, you’ll need to use a terrarium or an aquarium situation—something where the humidity is kept inside to prevent the plant from drying out. This includes both drying out in terms of watering and humidity levels. When the air is too dry, spike moss tends to shrivel up to nothing.

Most homes have air humidity levels of around 45% to 55%, but spike moss prefers it to be higher. Other methods of humidifying, like misting and humidity trays, usually aren’t enough for spike moss. A terrarium is the way to go. I’m taking off the lid here, and you can see how humid it is inside, even on the lid.

I just knocked off a little moss that I placed around this polka dot plant. I pruned the polka dot plant to look like a little tree because I wanted a tree-like appearance without it being too bushy. That’s why it looks like that. Then I added some dried moss around it.

Now, the spike moss, as you can see, is looking really good and is quite happy. I will need to prune it because it will grow so well that it might wind up on top and become a bit curvy and funky. But otherwise, it does great in terrariums. You don’t need to water it very often because it stays moist. You do want to check on it, but usually, you won’t have to do much watering. You also won’t need to do all the humidifying you would otherwise. Just keep the lid on.

A lot of terrariums have little holes in them to allow some air exchange, which provides a bit of airflow. This is important because you do want some airflow to prevent mold and other issues. I have a whole terrarium series, and this video is part of that series. I’ll add it to the playlist for making a terrarium because spike moss is a great terrarium plant. I do mention it in another video as well, but I wanted to reiterate it here because the question of keeping spike moss alive comes up a lot.

I’m going to put the lid back on now. Before I do that, you can see the little fairy contemplating things in her fairy house. She’s having a nice time, and I’ve got some colored glass in there to bring all the colors together.

Once again, in my terrarium series, you can learn all about putting a terrarium together, the different stages, and how to do it.

There we go. The spike moss is protected once again and living in its ideal climate.

How do you keep spike moss alive indoors?

Spike moss thrives in high humidity environments. To keep it alive indoors, place it in a terrarium or aquarium where humidity can be maintained. Without sufficient humidity, the plant may dry out and shrivel.

What is the ideal humidity level for spike moss?

Spike moss prefers humidity levels higher than what is typical in most homes, which is usually around 45% to 55%. A terrarium provides the ideal environment to maintain these higher humidity levels.

Can spike moss be grown outside of a terrarium?

It is difficult to grow spike moss outside of a terrarium unless you live in a very humid climate. Without a controlled humid environment, the plant is likely to dry out.

How often should I water spike moss in a terrarium?

Spike moss in a terrarium doesn’t need to be watered very often as the enclosed environment helps retain moisture. However, you should check the soil occasionally to ensure it remains moist.
