Today, I’m going to show you how to make a rooting medium for propagating houseplants. This general-purpose rooting medium works well for almost any houseplant, including succulents, which I’ll be demonstrating in a future video.

For successful propagation, it’s crucial to use a good rooting medium. While biologically active soil is ideal for growing houseplants, cuttings require a sterile propagation medium to prevent infections that could hinder rooting.

Over the years, I’ve developed a blend that works effectively. I’ll show you how to make it and list links to all the ingredients below.

Ingredients:

  1. Horticultural Sand: Provides drainage and bulk to keep cuttings upright. Use one part, which I measure as half a cup.

  2. Vermiculite: Retains moisture. Use one part, half a cup.

  3. Perlite: Allows for drainage. Use one part, half a cup.

  4. Peat Moss or Coconut Coir: Retains moisture and provides nutrients. Use one part, half a cup.

Instructions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a mixing container.
  2. Mix well to ensure even distribution.
  3. The sand was a bit moist, so check the moisture level. The medium should be slightly moist but not soggy. Add a small amount of water if needed.
  4. Mix until the medium is well-draining yet retains some moisture.

This rooting medium is perfect for propagating cuttings. It’s not ideal for seed starting, which requires a different mix. I’ll use this medium in my next video to root some succulents.
