Hello and welcome to HealthyHouseplants.com, where we teach you all about gardening and the great indoors. If you’d like to support our show, please use our Amazon affiliate link below.

Today, we’re looking at a terrarium that we built in my terrarium series. I want to show you how it’s growing here; it’s been a little over three weeks, and this plant has really taken off!

There’s a spike moss in here that we planted, which was this size when it was put in three weeks ago. You can see it is really loving its little situation here. Terrariums are great because they keep things moist, so you don’t have to water them. I haven’t watered this yet at all—it has stayed moist, and the plant is very happy inside with the little fairy, her pond, and her house.

As you can see, there’s a big difference in how much the spike moss has grown. They really thrive in humidity, so the more humidity you can give them, the better. If you’re having difficulty due to a dry climate or if you need to heat your house, a terrarium can be a great option for plants that love humidity, like maidenhair ferns.

Terrariums are also a joy to look at, offering a peek into the world inside. This is a fun project, and in prior videos (link to playlist provided), I showed how to create a terrarium—from choosing containers to planting.

This is a follow-up to show you how this beautiful terrarium looks after some growth. I also covered cultural tips and how to keep it healthy.

Terrarium Gardening FAQ

What makes terrariums a great choice for plants?

Terrariums are ideal because they create a moist environment, which means you don’t need to water them frequently. They provide a controlled setting that many humidity-loving plants thrive in.

How long can a terrarium stay moist without watering?

In this example, the terrarium has stayed moist for over three weeks without additional watering, thanks to the enclosed environment.

What types of plants grow well in a terrarium?

Humidity-loving plants, like spike moss and maidenhair ferns, do especially well in terrariums because of the high moisture levels. These plants flourish in the enclosed, humid atmosphere.

How can I set up my own terrarium?

To set up a terrarium, start by choosing a suitable container, then add plants that enjoy humidity. Our terrarium series videos cover each step, from selecting the container to planting.

Can terrariums help plants survive in a dry climate?

Yes, terrariums are excellent for growing humidity-loving plants in dry environments. The enclosed space retains moisture, making it easier for plants to thrive even if your home environment is dry.
