This is another installment of my series “My Favorite Thing About a Certain Houseplant,” and today I’m going to tell you my favorite thing about the Parlor Palm. This is Marco here. He’s grown quite a bit since he first appeared in some videos a while back, and he is looking good as you can tell.
My favorite thing about him and all Parlor Palms, although I am partial to him of course, is their name and why they’re called Parlor Palms. I do have a “Plant Stories” series which covers the history of various houseplants, so I have a plant story on this plant as well that tells you a lot about its history.
My favorite thing about it is the fact that it’s called a Parlor Palm because in Victorian times, just about every parlor had a palm, and this particular species of palm was in those parlors. Hence, the common name is the Parlor Palm. I think it just really sounds nice too. I always like alliterations – the ‘P’ and the ‘P’ in Parlor Palm. It kind of just rolls off your tongue and sounds very fancy.
When you have a Parlor Palm, you can put it in your parlor. I happen to have mine in my dining room area, but it works wherever. Although it would be kind of nice to put your Parlor Palm in your parlor, and then you could tell people when they admire your Parlor Palm that way back during Victorian times, that’s how the plant got its name – from being ubiquitous in parlors throughout England, and in particular, London.
