Hello and welcome to HealthyHouseplants.com, where we teach you all about gardening in the great indoors. If you’d like to support our show, please use our Amazon affiliate link below.

Today, I’ve got a plant spotlight for you. This is Philodendron Birkin. I love this plant, and a lot of people do, actually too. It’s relatively new and especially trendy in the philodendron world right now.

As you can see, it has these beautiful striped white striations, with some yellowish ones as well—some of them are a little on the yellowy side, but mostly white striations in the leaves. The leaves are pretty good size, so they make a nice statement. This plant really pops! In your garden, it is something that people are going to notice; it is something that your eye is going to fall on all the time because of the striations in the leaf.

There’s actually a little bit of movement to the plant even in it because of the way that the leaves have that white striation. You just can’t help but look at it and really admire it. As I like to say, our plants a lot of times are kind of like the leaves are like a tapestry, even, right? Because of the beauty in the leaves.

But the even cooler part about it is it’s all natural; Mother Nature has created these striations—not man, right? Not a man or woman, I should say. So, a beautiful plant as I mentioned, it each leaf is different. You can see that by looking at the plants, so there’s an ever-changing display for you throughout the year as the plant grows. Some of the leaves aren’t variegated, but many of them are.

It is a slow-growing houseplant that makes for an excellent addition to your garden because it is slow-growing. So you can really count on it looking the same for the most part for quite a while. As it matures, it can reach three feet tall and wide or so as a houseplant. It’s not going to get really big, but it will get bigger and wider. As mentioned, it is slow-growing.

It’s believed to be a sport of Red Congo, so the Philodendron Red Congo variety. A sport in the botany world means a genetic mutation. So it’s a mutation that has no explanation; there’s no reason for it; it just occurs. It’s a chance genetic mutation, and it can occur on any plant at any time.

Well, what happens when horticulturists find these cool genetic mutations—which, you know, this doesn’t look too mutated to me—but you get what we’re talking about here? Then what happens when they find them is they propagate them, and when they propagate them, they hope that they’ll come true and continue to create the same sort of plant, which this plant did.

So you can see this is a beautiful plant and how great that someone happened to find this “mutation” so that we could really enjoy this beautiful plant.

So there you go with this spotlight on Philodendron Birkin. They have become more readily available, so if you do find one, snap one up! You could ask your local nursery if they have any or if they’re going to get any in and that sort of thing. Check around for them, and as mentioned, get one if you can to add to your collection because it will really create an eye-catching focal piece for your collection.
