Find out what a cachepot is and what to do with one. These are decorative outer pots for your houseplants. If you want your plants to look pretty and want to use pots without drainage holes, you can use a cachepot as the outer pot and a plastic pot inside that drains.

Today, we have another installment of houseplant terminology. The term we’ll be discussing is “What is a catchpot?” or “cash po,” as it can also be pronounced.

A catchpot is a decorative outer container designed to hold an inner pot. You might have some of your plants in plastic pots that aren’t very attractive. To make the plant look prettier, you can use a decorative outer pot, known as a catchpot.

Catchpots generally don’t have drainage holes, so you can place a plant with drainage holes inside the catchpot that lacks them. This design allows for easy watering in place, provided you check that no water is sitting in the catchpot after watering. Catchpots can also be used for humidity trays.

Here’s an example of using a catchpot as a humidity tray. We put the plant on top of the catchpot, and it gets humidity once the catchpot is filled with a little water. I also have a video on creating humidity trays.

Here’s another example of a catchpot with a beautiful Chinese money plant (Pilea peperomioides). You can see that the plant is in an unattractive pot, but the decorative outer pot, or catchpot, enhances its appearance. This catchpot has no drainage hole, so it’s ideal for use with a plant pot that has drainage holes.

If you have pots without drainage holes, you may love their look and how well they complement the plant, as this one does with the Chinese money plant. You can keep the plant in the plastic pot or even repot it into a plastic pot, then place it in the outer pot.

Here’s another example with this African violet. The pretty pink color of the blooms matches nicely with the catchpot. Again, the plant is in a plastic pot that isn’t particularly attractive, but the outer pot is much prettier, with a flower-like look thanks to its scalloped edge.

You can even use a catchpot to give the African violet a little humidity, though you might want to match the colors a bit better. Here’s another catchpot with a lovely orchid inside. This decorative outer catchpot has a lot of cool colors and is a great way to dress up your indoor garden quickly and easily.

As mentioned, catchpots can also be used for humidity trays or for watering in place. Just make sure to pour out any excess water that the plant doesn’t use, or water the plant at the sink, let it soak up the water, drain it, and then place it back in the catchpot.

Now you know the meaning of catchpot or cash po!
