Today, I have another quick houseplant term for you. This term, along with many other houseplant terms, is featured in my book Indoor Gardening the Organic Way, which is right here. I do sell autographed copies of it in my store.
Today’s term is “mulch” or “mulching.” When we refer to mulch or mulching for houseplants, we’re talking about adding a mulch layer to the top of houseplant soil. Mulch does a few important things for your plants.
First, mulch helps you water your plants less frequently because it seals in moisture, allowing the soil to stay damp for longer periods. Secondly, it contributes to the beneficial microbes in the top layer of the soil, which is where much of the healthy biological activity occurs. These microbes, in turn, help keep your houseplants thriving.
Good mulches to use for houseplants include shredded barks, which is very effective. You can also use things like worm compost as mulch, or even coffee grounds.
Mulching indoors is very similar to mulching outdoors, but many people don’t know that you can mulch indoor plants too, and that it’s very beneficial for their growth and health.
