What is the Houseplant Crown and Why is it Important?

Find out what the houseplant crown is and why it’s so important. The crown is where the stem and roots meet and where all new growth comes from. If the houseplant crown isn’t healthy, the roots and foliage won’t be healthy.

Today’s installment of plant terminology covers the houseplant crown. This term, along with many others, can be found in my book “Indoor Gardening the Organic Way.”

The crown is the base of your houseplant, where the stem and root meet and from where new growth emerges. In some plants, the crown is more pronounced and easily visible or felt, while in others, it’s more understated. Generally, the crown is located above the soil line.

It’s crucial to note that in most instances, you should never bury the crown, as this can lead to crown rot. I have a separate video on crown rot and a plant terminology video covering that topic as well.

Because the crown is where the stem and roots meet, its health is vital to the overall health of the plant. In fact, it’s one of the most important parts of your plant. A solid and healthy crown affects the health of both the roots and the above-ground foliage. You can think of it as the epicenter of your plant’s health – if the crown is not healthy, it will impact your entire plant.

Understanding the importance of the houseplant crown can help you better care for your indoor plants and ensure their overall health and longevity.
