Hello and welcome to HealthyHouseplants.com, where we teach you all about gardening in the great indoors. If you’d like to support our show, please use our Amazon affiliate link below.

Today, I am showing you what a prayer plant, also known as a Maranta, looks like when it’s “praying.” As you can see, this is the Maranta in its prayer form. The leaves are facing upward, and many of them are coming together, as if in prayer. This upward movement is very indicative of the plant, and it’s what it looks like when it’s praying.

The plants pray at night. When it starts to get dark, their leaves will move up into the prayer position. If you watch your plant around dusk, when the light begins to fade, you can often see the plant move its leaves, which is a very cool experience. You may even hear a rustling sound in your house and wonder if someone or something is there. It could be your prayer plant folding its leaves into its prayer position.

In the morning, when it starts to become light, the prayer plant will lower its leaves out of the prayer position, and it will look quite different during the day. I am placing a picture right here, right now, so you can see what the plant looks like during the daytime when it isn’t praying.

So, now you know what a prayer plant looks like when it’s in its prayer form at night. Some people have wondered why their plant doesn’t look like it’s praying during the day, and now you know why—because they don’t pray in the daytime, they only pray at night.

If you have any other questions about prayer plants, feel free to ask! I also have a video linked below about how to care for these beautiful plants, which should answer more of your questions.
