Why it's SO Important to Feed Houseplants Organically

Discover why you want to feed your houseplants organically. Learn how feeding your houseplants organically enables you to create a self-sustaining environment for your indoor garden. Gardening organically means you feed the soil, which creates healthy plants. Gardening organically also means that you can fertilize less frequently.

Today, we are talking about why you should feed your houseplants organically. I actually wrote a book on this topic, Indoor Gardening the Organic Way: How to Create a Natural and Sustaining Environment for Your Houseplants. There are many reasons to feed plants organically, and we’ll start by discussing chemical fertilizers.

Chemical fertilizers are created in laboratories to promote plant growth. While effective, they don’t sustain houseplant soil. If you want vibrant, healthy houseplants, sustaining the soil is key. Chemical fertilizers kill off beneficial bacteria in the soil, effectively sterilizing it. This causes the plant to rely on constant feeding with chemical fertilizers.

One of the problems with constant chemical fertilizing is salt buildup, which leads to brown leaf tips, root dieback, and eventually root rot. I have videos on root rot and brown leaf tip issues. You may notice high NPK ratios on chemical fertilizers, which may promise vigorous plant growth. However, this comes at the cost of soil health, as these fertilizers kill beneficial organisms, causing the plant to depend entirely on you for nourishment.

Alternatively, organic feeding mimics nature by creating a self-sustaining environment. When you fertilize organically, you often only need to do so every 2-3 months (sometimes up to six months, depending on the plant). Succulents and ZZ plants, for example, don’t need frequent fertilizing.

Organic feeding saves you time and money, and it ensures that the soil remains rich in beneficial bacteria. This healthy environment supports your plant even when you forget to fertilize occasionally. My organic fertilizer includes worm compost, which is filled with micronutrients essential for plants, like a “green gourmet” meal for them.

Remember, as the caretaker of your indoor garden, you’re responsible for providing micro- and macronutrients, water, and light. The more organic supplements you can give (in moderation), the better. Worm compost is one example of an excellent organic nutrient that keeps your plants healthy.

Organic Fertilizing for Houseplants

Why should I feed my houseplants organically?

Feeding houseplants organically sustains the soil, supporting healthy bacteria and creating a natural environment for long-term growth.

What are chemical fertilizers, and how do they affect houseplants?

Chemical fertilizers are synthetic nutrients created in labs. While they promote growth, they can sterilize soil, eliminating beneficial bacteria and causing plant dependency on frequent feedings.

How often should I fertilize my plants organically?

With organic fertilizing, you typically only need to feed plants every 2-3 months, or even longer for certain varieties like ZZ plants or succulents.

What are the benefits of worm compost?

Worm compost is an excellent source of micronutrients, supporting soil health and providing essential nutrients that mimic natural growing conditions.

Can organic fertilizing save time and money?

Yes, organic fertilizing requires less frequent applications, saving you time and money while maintaining a healthy, sustainable soil environment.
