Today, I’m going to talk to you about the importance of turning your plants, especially ones that are near windows, and even those near full-spectrum lighting.

Here I have a kalanchoe, and I have videos on growing them. You’ll see that this guy is not exactly growing straight; you can see it leaning to one side. It was near a window, and it was leaning that way. So I let it do that to show you in this video what happens when a plant is etiolated, or reaching for the light, and what occurs when you don’t turn them.

If I had kept turning this plant a little bit at a time, it would have grown up straight instead of doing this whole number here. That’s something you want to do on a regular basis. I suggest doing this every time you water.

So here’s a tenant here; I love this plant! I’m going to show you this one. This tenant has been turned every time I water. It is near a window, so it gets some light from there. Every time you water, just move it maybe an eighth of an inch or a quarter of an inch. By doing this, you will slowly be rotating the plant, which will allow it to receive light from all sides and grow upwards rather than stretching in an unattractive manner.

If a plant has stretched, you can start doing this rotation, and it will often correct itself. However, if the plant has been growing that way for a really long time, especially larger plants, it can be very hard to correct later. Oftentimes, you’re going to have to resort to staking. If I want this kalanchoe to grow straight, I will have to put a stake in and tie the plant to it to redirect and correct its growth.

So, making one-eighth to one-quarter turns every time you water will keep your plants healthy, happy, and growing straight and strong for you.

FAQ – How to Properly Turn Your Houseplants

Why is it important to turn my houseplants?

Turning houseplants helps prevent etiolating, which occurs when plants reach for light and grow unevenly. Regularly rotating them allows for even light exposure, promoting healthy and upright growth.

How often should I turn my plants?

It’s recommended to turn your plants every time you water them. A slight rotation of an eighth to a quarter of an inch can make a significant difference in their growth.

What should I do if my plant has become etiolated?

If your plant has stretched due to lack of light, start rotating it regularly. In some cases, especially with larger plants, you may need to use stakes to help redirect their growth back to a straight position.

Can I correct the growth of a long-tilted plant?

While regular rotation can help, correcting the growth of a long-tilted plant may be challenging. Using stakes may be necessary to support the plant as it regains its upright form.

What is the best practice for watering and turning my plants?

When watering, take the opportunity to turn your plants slightly. This not only ensures they receive even light but also helps them remain healthy and happy.
